Cam Whitmore to Undergo Surgery, Sidelined Indefinitely
Villanova Forward Suffers Thumb Injury
Whitmore Injured in Tuesday's Loss to Magic
Villanova freshman forward Cam Whitmore will undergo surgery on his right thumb, the school announced Friday. The surgery will sideline Whitmore indefinitely, a major blow to the Wildcats.
Whitmore suffered the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Orlando Magic. The 6-foot-7 forward was assessed two technical fouls and ejected from the game after arguing a call with the referees.
Whitmore has been one of Villanova's most promising players this season. He is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. His absence will be a significant loss for the Wildcats, who are currently 13-10 overall.
It is unclear how long Whitmore will be out. The surgery is scheduled for next week, and the Wildcats will provide an update on his status following the procedure.
In Whitmore's absence, Villanova will likely turn to senior forward Eric Dixon and sophomore guard Justin Moore for increased production. Dixon is averaging 15.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, while Moore is averaging 14.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
Villanova will face a tough test without Whitmore on Saturday when they travel to face No. 1 Purdue. The Wildcats will need to find a way to replace Whitmore's production if they want to pull off the upset.
