Italy Win Euro 2020 After Penalty Shootout Drama
England's wait for a major tournament triumph continues after a heart-breaking penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020.
After 120 minutes of tense and absorbing football at Wembley Stadium, the match went to penalties with Italy prevailing 3-2.
The match was a tight and tense affair, with neither side able to break the deadlock in normal time. The first half was evenly contested, with England having the better of the chances in the opening stages.
Italy grew into the game as the half wore on, however, and they were the more dangerous side after the break. They had a golden opportunity to win the match in the 89th minute when Federico Chiesa struck the crossbar with a curling effort.
The match went to extra-time, and it was England who had the better of the chances. They could not find a way past a resolute Italian defence, however, and the match went to penalties.
Italy's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the hero in the shootout, saving two English penalties to give his side the victory.
